Motley Crue vs. Vince Neil, The Ultimate Showdown

Good evening Loyal Mockers and welcome to a special Chorus Game Blog Battle Royale Edition…Vince Neil’s ‘Exposed’ vs. Motley Crue’s self titled 1994 album with substitute lead singer John Corabi…while we may never know if Vince was fired or if he quit during his brief time away, let’s drink some beers and try and determine who looked better after the break-up…

1) Motley Crue (Loveshine)…Short and sweet acoustic ditty opens the proceedings…Shea the Beagle has been a bit rambunctious since the Pretty Lady left the house about an hour ago but the reconstituted Crue has settled him down…

2) Vince Neil (Forever)…And Vince Neil answers with a ballad of his own!! Score the first round for Vince and guitar compadre Steve Stevens…

METS UPDATE: Season quickly evaporating as they are losing to the Padres 8-6 heading to the ninth inning… (EDITOR’S NOTE: Mets end up losing 8-6 to drop a game below five hundred…injuries and underachieving play have led to a very disappointing World Series follow up…not really his fault but I think it’s time for #CollinsOut at the end of the season barring a miraculous turnaround)

3) Vince Neil (Gettin’ Hard)…Some 80’s swagger running through the veins of this solid offering…I thought this song was going to be about boners but I guess it’s about domestic troubles…

4) Motley Crue (Misunderstood)…Fairly grandiose offering as we get a rare soft/loud/soft dynamic from the Crue…first beer has been completed as all of these songs have packed a solid Chorus Game Crunch…I like the acoustic portion of this song better than the screeching bombastic middle section…

5) Vince Neil (Fine, Fine Wine)…Part of the diabetes portion of the record as it follows ‘Can’t Have Your Cake (And It Eat Too)’…Has Steve Stevens ever played at The Chance? I would wager he has…

Steve Stevens

OLYMPICS: Some Jamaican sprinter has a hyphen in both her first and last names! Wow, turns out Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce has won the 100 meter dash in each of the last two Olympics, a track and field expert I am not…

6) Vince Neil (Can’t Change Me)…Vince burning through a lot of his hits at the start of the evening figuring I will be passed out by song 15…can’t say enough about the mandolin playing on this song…

7) Motley Crue (Babykills)…This is an extra track from an EP that people who bought the Motley Crue album could send away for in the mail (how old school does that sound?)…some really inane band chatter bookends this truly dreadful number…

8) Motley Crue (Welcome To The Numb)…Another up-tempo number that is slowly growing on me but still seems a bit overstuffed…

9) Vince Neil (Set Me Free)…Our good friend Dread World was very impressed by Stevie-Boy’s guitar solo on this song and you can hear all about on the latest Mockers Podcast!

10) Motley Crue (Hooligan’s Holiday)…Finally, The Motley Crue deliver a solid performance…pardon me as I look for a piece of the action as well as a piece of the pie…

11) Motley Crue (Smoke The Sky)…This song claims that Marco Polo and Socrates both smoked the marijuana…not a bad idea! This song is a lot better after reading the lyrics…really solid one-two punch puts the Crue back in the game about halfway through the bout…

12) Vince Neil (Look In Her Eyes)…Opening guitar lick sounds just like Guns’n’Roses “Pretty Tied Up”, which makes me want to listen to ‘Use Your Illusion II’…and thanks to my good friend Eric Mocker, I am now downloading for off-line listening ‘Use Your Illusion II’…after two years of trying he has finally convinced me that subscription is the way to go.

13) Motley Crue (Livin’ In The Know)…Another bonus track and I feel as if these are going to unfairly downgrade this record because they, well, they aren’t good…

14) Motley Crue (Til Death Do Us Part)…They should have called themselves Motley in Chains or Mudley Crue for this record as you can tell the grunge movement is influencing their sound…this song might plod along for a bit too long but I smell some slow grower potential…

15) Vince Neil (The Edge)…I really like this one…Dream Theater meets Vince Neil!

OLYMPIC UPDATE: An American woman won the shot put competition! She also might have been in this summer’s Ghostbusters movie…Michelle Carter

16) Vince Neil (You’re Invited (But Your Friend Can’t Come)…I chuckle every time I hear the chorus to this song…

17) Motley Crue (Droppin’ Like Flies)…They sound like Motley Temple Pilots during the refrain on this offering…

MY FAVORITE JOHN CORABI MEMORY: I believe in the year 2000 I went to the Country Pines lounge in Endicott with what would end up being the great art collective Meet The Mockers to see John’s band Union play a 35 minute set…I remember chanting “Bruce” at some point in honor of guitarist Bruce Kulick, who once played in KISS but at that point was playing in a shit-house bar in front of about 175 people…I may or may not have been on some very potent supplements that evening, but I do remember a very fun evening and Joe Mocker even bought a Union CD…this has been my favorite John Corabi memory!

performs at the Monster Circus show at the Las Vegas Hilton March 26, 2009 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The show combines a concert featuring veteran rock stars performing hit songs from the Õ70s, Õ80s and Õ90s with dancers, aerialists and circus acts.

18) Motley Crue (Hypnotized)…The third and final bonus track, significantly better than the previous two songs…

19) Vince Neil (Sister of Pain)…The lead single…wait, no it’s not…notation number 16 takes that honor. Damn, this blog is putting a hurting on me…let’s move on…

20) Vince Neil (Can’t Have Your Cake)…Vince always listens to his mama, who was not a fool…

21) Vince Neil (Living Is A Luxury)…Love the synths and horns that sneak into the mix every now and then…this song has a distant kindred spirit in the Stephen Stills/Neil Young record…every damn time that random fucking siren sound effect comes on in this song I think a cop is pulling me over…that also goes for every siren sound effect that is on any song, that should be illegal…

22) Motley Crue (Poison Apples)…This song is a blueprint for what they should have done for the record… melodic rock that blends perfectly between 80’s swagger and early 90’s grunge…

23) Motley Crue (Power To The Music)…This song is almost an anti-slow grower…it’s instantly accessible but the more you listen to it the more ridiculous it sounds…

24) Motley Crue (Driftaway)…Been a while since we heard a ballad and this is sounding mighty fine…

25) Motley Crue (Hammered)…”You’re the monkey on my back and it’s time for you to go”…oh yeah, this song is all about Vince Neil! That must have been awkward for Corabi to sing, unless he had a beef with Vince himself…another song that should have been over a minute ago…

26) Motley Crue (Uncle Jack)…Yes, I have completed the random!! 26 songs, 2 hours, 8 heats for the women’s 100 yard dash, 5 beers and zero interruptions from Shea the Beagle! Nice move to save the song about the pedophile uncle to the very end…

FINAL VERDICT: Going to roll with Vince Neil on this one although he owes a debt of gratitude to Stevie-Boy Stevens, whose guitar was the MVP of the random.  Not too surprisingly, this proved to be the only Corabi/Crue Collaboration as the fit just didn’t seem quite right. Thanks to my brother-in-arms Eric Mocker for continuing my Crueducation and thank you, Loyal Mockers, for reading!
