KISS and Radiohead Together For the First Time Ever!

Good afternoon Loyal Mockers and welcome to the latest Mockers Podcast Mocumendation Blog! I am sure everyone has already listened to our latest podcast but just in case you haven’t here is the rundown.  Each week my co-host and I give each other recommendations (movies, TV shows, music albums) that we have never seen or heard before.

For episode three, I was once again assigned an 80’s record drenched in glam with KISS’s ‘Creatures of the Night’.  Meanwhile, I gave Eric the task of listening to Radiohead’s second album, ‘The Bends’. Let’s throw together a random and see if these wildly divergent groups can play nice together.

As is often the case when I write these blogs I am also watching a sporting event and we have a cracking good fixture to start Euro 2016 as the home-standing and heavily favored French are locked in a 1-1 tie with Romania. Twenty minutes left and this game is on the knife’s edge!

1) Radiohead (My Iron Lung)…’Ok Computer’ was my first real exposure to Radiohead but I quickly circled back to this record and have always held it in high esteem.

2) Radiohead (Bones)…Thom Yorke’s ode to Dr. McCoy…my Pretty Lady has arrived home from the Derm Shop and I wonder which album she will like better? Neither would be my initial guess.

3) Radiohead (High and Dry)…I know all these songs like the back of my hand but still amazed at how much more instantly accessible this record compared to everything else that followed…I am really digging their new joint but I am nowhere close to digesting it all…

INTERESTING WIKIPEDIA FACT: The Bends only made it 88 on the Billboard album chart in America…that is surprising considering how often I saw Thom Yorke in a shopping cart on MTV in the ‘Fake Plastic Trees’ video…

4) KISS (Rock and Roll Hell)…Oh fuck yeah, I know this one and it even has The Pretty Lady tapping her toes…I am very poor this weekend so had to buy a 12 pack of Genny for The Chorus Game Festivities and my first one will nearly be gone after this tune…

5) Radiohead (Nice Dream)…Wow, I was expecting a break from The Chorus Game with this record but that has not been the case and my first Genny is headed to the recycling bin…

6) KISS (I Still Love You)…A Paul Stanley slow burner, maybe he was singing this to Ace Frehley who had made way for Vinnie Vincent at this stage of the KISS Timeline…

EURO UPDATE: Wow, a thunderous strike from Frenchman Dimitri Payet lands in the upper left corner of the net and France leads 2-1 with only a few minutes left to play…he has been the best player on the pitch but this will be an extremely disappointing result for Romania, who competed well enough to earn a point…

7) Radiohead (Planet Telex)…Opening track with a title that seems inspired by a Dr. Who episode…

8) KISS (Keep Me Comin)…Oh yeah, hot and sleazy….Genny number two is done…

RUSSIANS: We have had Russians next door for the past month as they have been remodeling the outside of our neighbor’s house. I was talking to Vlad the other day and mentioned that our porch was sloping and he just came over to take a look. He brought over his old ass co-worker, Mr. Slavik (no first names, thank you very much) to also take a gander. Neither of them speak English very well so I hope we didn’t just agree to have them fix it.

9) Radiohead (Black Star)…One of my favorites as we have more jangly guitars and another killer chorus…wish that one was longer…

10) Radiohead (The Bends)…I don’t have any intention of ever getting the bends as scuba diving seems too challenging for me to take up…I’ll go to the aquarium. “I want to live, I want to breathe. I want to be part of the human race”…wow, forgot how good that song was…

MOTHER-IN-LAW: The nightly call from the Pretty Lady puts the brakes on the random for a bit and we learn that Nance has been going to The Villages activity center and been working out to Leslie Sansone’s ‘Walking Off the Pounds’

11) KISS (Killer)…Solid rock’n’roll that will stone cold kill my third Genny…

WIKIPEDIA FACT #1: This album was no big chart topper either and it took until 1994 (a year before ‘The Bends’ was released) for it to be Certified Gold…

12) KISS (Saint and Sinner)…I am eschewing a phone call from my Podcast Partner as I need to get through this random so I can begin my other homework for this week’s podcast…please give The Mockers Podcast a listen, subscribe and leave a review if you have the time, it is much appreciated…this might be my least favorite song of the night, not sleazy enough…

13) Radiohead (Bullet Proof…I Wish I Was)…Plaintive Yorke that is probably Eric’s least favorite song of the album…

14) Radiohead (Sulk)…Another song that is rekindling my memory bone…awesome closing jam…

15) Radiohead (Fake Plastic Trees)…I don’t understand why they don’t play this song at every concert…I have seen them twice and I think they played it when I saw them at MSG (2003 or 2004) but definitely not when I saw them in Boston with Funzie in 2012…

16) Radiohead (Just)…Wow, a one-two combination of the album’s best songs…who would have thought they would turn so fucking weird (and wonderful) when you hear the pure power pop guitar majesty of this tune…The Pretty Lady is actually cooking dinner tonight as she is excited to try the Prego Vodka pasta sauce…

17) Radiohead (Street Spirit (Fade Out)…Perfect herbal supplement song but will refrain as dinner isn’t far away…

18) KISS (I Love It Loud)…I know this one!!

WIKIPEDIA FACT #2: Eddie Van Halen was so disgruntled with David Lee Roth that he wanted to replace Ace in the band but Gene Simmons felt threatened and said fuck no…wow, I am sure that Eric has told me that before but I really enjoyed that nugget…

19) KISS (War Machine)…Poor War Machine, he didn’t fare too well in ‘Captain America: Civil War’…

WIKIPEDIA FACT #3: I like how drummer Eric Carr and guitarist Vinnie Vincent aren’t band members but employees…Gene Simmons is such an asshole…

20) KISS (Creature of the Night)…On to Genny number five and I am starting to feel the burn and I don’t feel as if I will receive a respite with this song…Wikipedia repeatedly states that this is KISS’S (do you capitalize the ‘s’ after the apostrophe on KISS?) hardest rocking album and I can see that…

21) KISS (Danger)…According to Eric and our friend Dreadworld this tune will quickly spell the end of my fifth Genny and it also signals the end of the random…perfect timing as the creamy vodka sauce is ready! Time to eat and brew some coffee…Rock solid night of rock’n’roll, who knew that Radiohead and KISS could co-headline a bill! Thanks for reading and keep on mockin’!
