Anthrax, Dropkick Murphys and The Librarian’s Best of 2016!!

Good evening Loyal Mockers and welcome to a Chorus Game Battle Royale featuring the Dropkick Murphys and Anthrax…yes, you’ll never know what will appear on this website or on the stupendous Mockers Podcast, which you can listen to weekly!

COMBATANTS: Anthrax will be represented by their 1990 album ‘Persistence in Time’ while the Dropkick Murphys are offering their brand new “11 Short Stories of Pain & Glory”…I don’t have much knowledge of either of these bands…I’ve always thought of Anthrax as a bit too heavy metal-ish for my tastes and Irish Punk has never been in my wheelhouse…

WHAT’S ON TV: Some NFL Playoff action and the Houston Texans are hanging tough with the hated New England Patriots as they are only trailing by four at the start of the second half…Osweiler!!

1) Anthrax (Intro To Reality)…One of my favorite tunes on this record mainly because the intensity is dialed back a bit for the first couple of minutes…excellent guitarman-ship from Scott Ian on this one and throughout the album

GAME UPDATE: Pussy-face Bill O’Brien punts the ball on a fourth and three from the New England forty…c’mon, you are 17 point underdogs, you gotta take some chances because you know Assface Brady will get his shit together soon…

2) Dropkick Murphys (Paying My Way)…These songs go down like a midnight snack as they are all instantly accessible and easy to understand…

3) Dropkick Murphys (Sandlot)…This is the Dropkick’s ninth studio album and I would be willing to wager that they all kinda sound like this one…the classic “Let’s look back on our youth with fondness” song that every aging Irish Punk band needs to put out on their ninth record…

4) Anthrax (Got The Time)…I have never been a fan of the thrash metal double kick drum sound as it usually ends up making me want to punch myself in the face…that being said, the more I hear it the less it bothers me on this record and this tune has a glitchy, cool chorus…

GAME UPDATE: Well, look at that…Assface Brady leads a touchdown drive and the Pats go up by 11 with nine minutes left in the third quarter…that is what you get for being a Pussy-Face, Bill O’Brien…

5) Dropkick Murphys (Kicked to the Curb)…The classic “I ain’t got nothing left because you dumped me” song that every aging Irish punk band needs to put out on their ninth record…

GAME UPDATE: Osweiler the Horrible throws an interception and this game is in danger of getting out of hand…fucking Patriots make my insides want to vomit…

6) Dropkick Murphys (Blood)…This song gets extra bonus points for the bagpipes and a rousing chorus that will have you raising your pints to the sky…

7) Anthrax (Time)…This album is littered with 6-7 minute mini-metal operas and this is one of the better ones…”Time and life, Life and time, One day I’ll get what’s mine, Through the persistence of time”…rock solid chorus highlights a track that gets better with every listen…

8) Dropkick Murphys (You’ll Never Walk Alone)..As a fan of the Lads of Liverpool I was happy to see this tune as it’s sung at Anfield before every Reds fixture…speaking of which, a huge match against Manchester United tomorrow morning…

9) Anthrax (One Man Stands)…I am pretty sure this is also the title of a Stephen Seagal movie…”And the wall, cracks…and the wall, cracks”…

GAME UPDATE: No doubting that Osweiler the Garbageman has been bad this year but he just threw a perfect pass that was dropped in the end zone by rookie Will Fuller, who clearly must have been on a boat this week…oh man, that is typical New England Playoff Luck, how many more years must I endure this?

10) Anthrax (In My World)…”I’m not afraid, I’m not afraid, Nothing touches me I’m a walking razor blade”…I didn’t think it possible upon first listen but Anthrax has overtaken the Dropkicks…just a lot of meat on this thrash metal bone…

11) Anthrax (Blood)…Yes, both of these albums have a song called ‘Blood’ on them! Fucking crazy! Solid metal jam that would surely delight the crowd at Nikstock…

GAME UPDATE: Assface Brady throws his second interception of the game but the Texans can only manage a field goal and they trail by eight at the start of the fourth quarter…

12) Dropkick Murphys (Until The Next Time)… The classic “I can’t wait until the next time we have this much fun” song that every aging Irish punk band needs to put on their ninth record…

13) Dropkick Murphys (4-15-13)…I betcha these guys went to see ‘Patriot’s Day’ this weekend…

GAME UPDATE: Brock overthrows a wide open DeAndre Hopkins and the pass is intercepted…Pats score two plays later…game over…fuck, Osweiler really is hot trash…

14) Dropkick Murphys (Rebels With A Cause)…Ok, time to change it up a bit as Anthrax is the clear winner of this Battle Royale…

Every year our good friend The Librarian releases a compilation with his favorite tunes on it so let’s see what has been rocking central Massachusetts in 2016!

1) Radiohead (Burn The Witch)…No complaints on his opening track…this was one of my favorite albums of the year and this tune continues to improve with every listen…

2) Daughter (No Care)…I feel like my friend is listening to a lot more new stuff than I am as this album is littered with groups I’ve never heard of…propulsive melody with some interesting percussive flourishes but I question this song’s inclusion (as yearly a tradition as Funzie’s compilation!)…

3) Pinegrove (Aphasia)…Two big thumbs up for Pinegrove!! ‘Old Friends’ is another great tune on this record that is chock full of them…

4) Marlon Williams (I’m Lost Without You)…Sultry crooner this Marlon Williams is, and I can only imagine our Librarian singing this song to his lady friend, The Fiddler…this songs seems like it has teleported in from the 1950’s but got sideswiped by some 70’s electro prog…

5) Mitski (Fireworks)…Mitski looks like a fifteen year old girl but she has some decent pipes on her and this song is making a strong impression…I could see the guy who was stalking Jessica Lea Mayfield wanting to stalk Mitski…

6) Saul Williams (Burundi (featuring Emily Kokal)…I love me some Kokal…Isn’t Burundi the name of the country that Eddie Murphy is from in ‘Coming To America’?…“I’m a hacker, I’m a hacker, I’m a hacker in your hard drive”…I am having some nostalgia thinking of hanging out at The Librarian’s apartment in Oneonta, New York and listening to songs like this…

7) Astronautilus (Forest Fire)…This guy kinda looks like Ryan Gosling and he likes to speak/sing about subjects that would upset Smokey the Bear…not really a fan of this one although it picks up a bit in the back half…

8) Andy Shauf (Alexander All Alone)…Where the hell is he finding these dudes? This one has some slow grower potential…kinda reminds me of The Shins

9) Margaret Glaspy (Parental Guidance)…Holy high-pitched waify voice!! At least there are some electric guitars churning as I haven’t heard much of those on this compilation so far…”It’s about time you started to try a little harder, don’t you think”….this one is rock solid…

10) Michael Kiwanuka (I’ll Never Love)…I could see Glaspy and Kiwanuka hooking up much to Glaspy’s dad’s disapproval…The Librarian always prides himself on the song transitions and this one is smooth as a shot of Tennessee whiskey…

11) Big Thief (Paul)…Another high-pitched female singer as we clearly see what was turning The Librarian on this year…it does not appear that this song is about the Seth Rogen alien movie…the chorus does have a nagging hypnotic feel to it…

12) Car Seat Headrest (Destroyed by Hippie Powers)…My favorite album of the year gets a song on the compilation!! I won’t quibble with his selection as every damn tune on this record rocks balls…

13) Lucy Dacus (Strange Torpedo)…Rock solid rock’n’roll and it causes Shea the Beagle to roll over…this album is on an uptick!

14) Damien Jurado (Exit 353)…I didn’t know that Jurado put out a 2016 release! Damn you Funzie and your lengthy albums, I am getting fatigued! Typically solid work by this pysch-indie-an…

15) Woods (Politics of Free)…This band rocked the house when they opened for My Morning Jacket in a November 2015 concert I saw with my brother Nick Mocker and my good friend Damon Mocker…

16) Margo Price (Hurtin’ (On The Bottle)…Wow, a blast of old school country comes a calling…sounds like she would be good friends with Chris Stapleton considering their shared affinity for whiskey…

17) Drive-By Truckers (What It Means)…Ha, he doesn’t know it because The Librarian doesn’t listen to The Mockers Podcast but I mockumended this very song to Eric back in episode twenty-two! We also talk Shovels and Rope on this one so any fans of Southern Fried Rock’n’Roll should take a listen!

18) A Tribe Called Quest (We The People…)…This is definitely out of my wheelhouse…catchy refrain that Donald Trump would take way too literally…

19) Beyonce (Freedom (featuring Kendrick Lamar)…My Google Music doesn’t have the rights for this so I watched a live version with quite the elaborate stage and light show…I liked how they were splashing in water by the end…

20) The Suitcase Junket (Wherever I Wake Up)…Slightly folky close to the proceedings…thanks to The Librarian for taking the time to compile these tunes and my response will be quick and decisive! And thank you for reading Loyal Mockers, until we meet again!
